July Wrap-up + August TBR

Hello everyone,

This month was a bit of a slow month for personal reasons. Out of my TBR, I was only able to finish Winter Town by Stephen Emond and start The Light After the War by Anita Abriel. See below for my reviews.

Winter Town by Stephen Emond

Pages: 315

Published by Little Brown and Company in December 2012

Genre(s): YA, fiction, novel

star rating: ★★★★☆

This was a cute story about Lucy and Evan that anyone can relate to. Lucy comes from what most people would call a broken home. Her parents are divorced and her mom is dating a guy who clearly wants Lucy out of the house. Lucy spends Christmas with her dad like she usually does every year, but little does she know that a little romance may be in store for her. Evan is struggling with what he wants for himself when he graduates from high school. His parents seem to want him to attend an Ivy League school to become a doctor or lawyer. Only Evan wants to be an artist. Lucy sees Evan’s potential but he doesn’t want to disappoint his parents, particularly his father. The book is filled with various illustrations including Evan’s comic about his and Lucy’s adventures in their fantasy world. I gave this book 4 stars as I was left wanting more. Don’t get me wrong, this book was really good but I want to know more about Evan and Lucy’s future.

The Light After the War by Anita Abriel

Pages: 398

Published by ATRIA Books in November 2020

Genre(s): historical fiction, war story, fiction

star rating: rating coming in August

I attempted to start this book; however, I was slightly stressed and did not have the motivation to actually read. I would probably say at this point I was experiencing a slump. I have nothing negative to say about the book so far. From what I read, Anita Abriel writes about her mother’s story during and post World War II (WWII). Her mother, Vera, and her mother’s friend, Edith, managed to escape the train taking them to Auschwitz but their mothers stayed behind. As time goes on, Vera and Edith have accepted that they have lost their loved ones and eventually travel to Italy. Vera ends up engaged only for her fiancé to leave her behind - don’t worry, I won’t spoil the book for those who wish to read it. So far, I am intrigued and wish to know more about Vera and Edith’s story. Check the next blog at the end of August for my final thoughts.

August TBR

One of the book-tubers I watch decided to spend a week reading books that start with each letter in her name. I thought this was an interesting challenge and decided I would do this to obtain my August TBR. These are the books I will be reading in addition to finishing The Light After the War.

As per usual, feel free to send me book recs, ideas for reading challenges, and ideas for future reading blogs at blueoceans.sanddollar@gmail.com or comment down below.

See you next blog.
